Yahoo Messenger 10 Uses GIPS Video Technology
August 27, 2009
By Ted Stevenson

San Francisco, Calif.-based IP communications software provider Global IP Solutions this week announced that its GIPS VideoEngine powers video calling for the new Yahoo Messenger client, version 10, currently available (here) as beta.

GIPS' VoiceEngine has been the foundation of Yahoo Messenger's PC-based VoIP capability since 2006, but with version 10, the product will provide high-quality, full-screen video calling service.

"The GIPS VideoEngine enables us to provide the Yahoo! Messenger community with the best video experience possible," said senior director of Yahoo! MessengerDave Merriwether in a statement. "Now people can enjoy full-screen, face-to-face chats with friends and family at no cost, in the familiar Yahoo! Messenger environment."

GIPS' CEO Emerick Woods noted Yahoo Messenger's status as the communications platform that gives its users an unparalleled set of choices for staying connected—using text IM, PC-based telephonoy, mobile text messaging, and now video calling. “We’re proud to work with Yahoo! to deliver a truly differentiated high quality video experience for the hundreds of millions of people on Yahoo! Messenger around the world,” said Woods.
